Sir Henry Cole commissioned his painter friend John Callcott Horsley to come up with a custom Christmas and New Year greeting card that he could send to his friends. One of those 18 cards produced more than a century and a half ago was auctioned by Sotheby's in 2010 and sold for $7000! Commercial production of Christmas and New Year greeting cards began in 1843.
